Visual Inspection

A full scuba cylinder contains enough potential energy to lift a full-size fire truck three feet up in the air. This risk isn’t just theoretical. Scuba tanks that have exploded under pressure have caused devastating property damage, severe personal injury and even death.

This is why the DOT requires high-pressure cylinders to be visually inspected for potential failure at least once a year. Visual inspections or VIPs can help identify damage before it reaches the point of being dangerous.

When performing visual inspections, Scuba Tank Services follows the guidelines established by:

  • Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA)
  • Compressed Gass Association (CGA)
  • Professional Cylinder Inspectors (PCI)
  • International Training (SDI/TDI/ERDI)

Please note: It is rare to find an aluminum scuba cylinder made prior to 1988 that is still in service. Most dive centers won’t fill them. Nevertheless, if you have such a cylinder and it is still in hydro, we can inspect it using our visual eddy-current system. Once out of hydro, however, we cannot.
